my journey to becoming a therapist

Something shifted years ago while attending therapy with my now co-parent. As the therapist doled out advice, I wondered whether she was grasping my unique experience or aiming to fit me into a box. In that moment, I felt drawn to pursue my authentic calling as a relationship and family therapist who does not use a one-size-fits-all approach.

Today, I find deep meaning in holding space with clients and their loved ones as we co-explore life’s challenges. I am constantly reminded of the awe and wonder I find as I facilitate new, connecting conversations.

my therapeutic philosophy

Growing up in the Midwest, I witnessed my mother lose her battle to mental illness, and her lonely journey had a profound impact on my soul. As a marriage and family therapist, I do not adopt the conventional approach of labeling fellow humans with diagnoses or handing out books or potions to 'fix' what visits them. Instead, I believe that change happens when we're given space to authentically be ourselves, feel heard in all of our suffering, and gently disconnect the 'problem' from ourselves.

Our work together involves co-authoring the stories you've been told, told others, and told yourself, with an ear toward gently expanding the "shoulds" that limit you. This process aims to amplify the dreams and virtues that resonate with your heart.

what it's like to work with me

Working with me is likely different than working with most other therapists. I treat each session like our first and last, striving to amplify your autonomy in choosing when and how much counseling to receive. While I am an expert therapist with the tools necessary to support your full range of emotions and experiences, my position is to co-explore with you. I encourage you to lean on your lived experiences and unique cultural wisdom to untangle the struggles that visit you.

I respectfully ask questions that deepen your stories, co-develop metaphors to root you in your experiences, and listen intently to your humanity as you lean into new understandings and possibilities.

outside of therapy

When I'm not holding space with clients, you might find me playing pickleball, on a bike ride, watching my kiddos play, or having tea with a loved one. I also enjoy music, art, and feeling the warm Boulder sun beam down on my face as I watch life's mystery gently unfurl before me.
